Caucuses of African Ministers of Education

Caucus, Paris, France, 28 October 1999

This Caucus was convened on the occasion of the UNESCO General Conference (25 October - 16 November 1999). The Caucus continued discussion on ways and means of creating synergy between the different initiatives of African Ministers, especially in the context of the OAU Decade of Education in Africa [1997-2006].

The President of the Intergovernmental Committee of MINEDAF VII, Professor Kader Asmal of South Africa, presented a report on a number of actions, including the details of the offer of the Government of South Africa to share its institutions of higher learning with the other African countries on a reciprocal basis.

This Web site of African Ministers of Education, and its associated MINEDAF Document Service, both sponsored by UNESCO, were launched at a ceremony during the Caucus. In a statement during the launch ceremony, the Representative of the Director-General of UNESCO, Mr. Colin Power (then Deputy Director-General for Education), announced that the site, a public facility to which Ministers, Senior Aides and other users would have access, would also incorporate a restricted area to provide a relatively secure channel through which Ministers could communicate with each other.
