MINEDAF VII and Other Initiatives
SADC - Southern
African Development Community
Collaboration between UNESCO
and SADC is facilitated
by the Memorandum of Understanding signed by the Executive Heads of the
two Organizations (on 25 January 1996 and 31 January 1996, respectively). The
SADC Protocol on Education and Training and the decisions of African
Ministers of Education in follow-up to MINEDAF VII are other official
instruments which provide a framework for such collaboration.
The Minister of Education of South Africa, Professor
Kader Asmal, in his capacity as President of the Intergovernmental
Committee of MINEDAF, has provided briefings to other SADC Education
Ministers on regional and sub-regional initiatives, such as those under the Follow-up
to MINEDAF and other networks of
African Ministers (e.g., ADEA,
COMEDAF,
U.N. Special Initiative
on Africa,
etc.). Similar briefings have been provided by the Swaziland Minister of
Education, who Chairs the SADC HRD Sector. The Secretariats of the two
Organizations are also in regular contact. The UNESCO
Harare Office is Focal Point for SADC.
